Is Now a Good Time To Invest?

It's the question on many of our minds as well as in the media these days - should we be investing our resources and if so, what type of investments will earn us the return we're looking for?

If you ask someone like me, an education supporter and parent, I believe that there is no better investment than ones we make on behalf of our children, especially for their education. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow. The return on investing in their education is absolutely priceless as our children prepare themselves for the challenges of the 21st century. Our investment creates adults who will be independent, competitive and engaged citizens of the world.

The Falls Church Education Foundation (FCEF) was established in 2003 to ensure that our "return on investment" is the same for students of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to provide supplemental "beyond that normally expected" educational support to students, their families and teachers.

When the Falls Church Education Foundation funded a teacher grant to take George Mason High School students to Ford's Theatre to see The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn performed by deaf and hearing actors, students were left speechless by the power of the deaf actors' graceful sign language, the hearing actors' impressive vocal ranges and the imaginative set. One teacher wrote:

"these experiences will go a long way to open students minds to new and different learning opportunities, hopefully for life.such moments of realization cannot be planned, no matter how great the teacher or learning institution"

More than 3,000 students have already benefitted from this support including 11th grade students who participated in the award-winning Challenge Day program. After completing this exceptional program, one of the students commented that 'This day was the single most important experience for me during all four years at George Mason High School-it has truly changed my life and there is no way I can express my gratitude!"

To offset uncertainties and provide for future educational needs, the Foundation has established an endowment fund as the cornerstone of our efforts to provide long-term financial support to the Falls Church City Public Schools. As the school budget is stretched thin to keep up with the costs of providing public education in an uncertain economic climate, it will be increasingly difficult for our system to continue its tradition of excellence in education.

By contributing to the Legacy Endowment Fund the equivalent of $1 per school day or $180 for the year, you can help ensure that excellence in public education will continue to be the value that distinguishes the City of Falls Church from other communities.

FCEF representatives and volunteers will be calling later this month to ask for your pledge. If you'd prefer to give in advance of the call, please complete the enclosed form and return it to the Foundation with your tax deductible contribution by November 17th.

Now is the time for us to make this critical investment in our most precious resource-the future of our students. Thank you for your support.
