Jessica Blair Szymanski Memorial Scholarship
The Jessica Blair Szymanski Memorial Scholarship has been established for students of George Mason High School in memory of Jessica, a member of the Class of 2002.
Jessica was killed in a tragic accident on October 15, 2002 while returning to college following her Fall Break. She was an energetic
and enthusiastic young woman who also was a talented and active member of many GMHS organizations. She left a
positive impression on students, teachers and parents as someone who cared deeply for others, and that capacity, like
her zest for living, was seemingly endless.
A $1,000 scholarship, renewable for three subsequent years of post-high school education, will be awarded annually during the GMHS graduation awards ceremony. Jessica's family
would like to honor her memory by awarding this scholarship to a student or students whose application shows that they have demonstrated Jessica's perseverance, commitment, compassion
and love of life.
George Mason Seniors May Apply
Applicants are asked to write a personal statement, submit a letter of recommendation, and complete the application which can be obtained through your guidance counselor.
In the one-page personal statement, applicants may write about their high school experience. While not limited to the the following, topics can include friendships developed, the role of extra-curricular activities in their lives, the impact of a class or assembly, or a special relationship with a teacher, coach or fellow student.
The letter of recommendation should provide insight as to how the applicant made George Mason High School and/or the greater community a better place. The letter can be from a family member who is not a parent, a teacher, a friend, a youth group leader, or other person who knows the applicant well.
